Most things to do in Duong Dong lie within 3 km of Sunset Beach Resort & Spa, so a full day needs no tour. The riverside market opens at 5 am, Coi Nguon Museum is 1.6 km away and costs VND 50,000, Sung Hung Pagoda is a two-minute drive, the night market is 2.3 km off, and the sun sets over Long Beach right in front of the hotel. Dive and snorkel shops, massage salons and cooking classes line the same road, Tran Hung Dao.
What this list leaves out: the north-island theme parks and Sunset Town in An Thoi are 23–24 km away, a 35–45 minute drive, and need half a day each.

Morning: the Duong Dong river market
Duong Dong market, at 21 Tran Phu in the middle of town, sits on the riverbank near the mouth of the Duong Dong river and trades from 5 am to 7 pm. Come early: local guides time the fresh seafood for 6–9 am, when the catch is laid out, and again at 3–5 pm. Expect mackerel, blue swimming crab, squid and baskets of dried shrimp, plus fruit, bottled fish sauce and breakfast stalls.
It is a working market, with wet floors and vendors who sell by the kilo. Wear shoes you can rinse, carry small notes, and ask with a nod before photographing faces. A Grab from the hotel takes 5–10 minutes; from the market, the river mouth and Dinh Cau, the small temple on a rock where locals gather at dusk, sit close by.
Coi Nguon Museum and Sung Hung Pagoda
Coi Nguon Museum, 1.6 km
Coi Nguon, at 149 Tran Hung Dao, is a private museum begun in 2009 by local collector Huynh Phuoc Nghe. Its five floors hold more than 2,600 artefacts: ceramics and bronze, coral and shells, tools from fish-sauce making, pearl work and stilt-house life, and over 300 documents in Vietnamese, English and French. Tickets were VND 50,000 in 2025 listings.
Listings disagree on hours. Two give 7–11 am and 1–5 pm, one of them Monday to Saturday only; another gives 8 am to 4 pm daily. Go mid-morning on a weekday and allow an hour. The walk from the hotel is about 19 minutes along the main road; at night, Origin 1982, a cocktail bar in a 1982 wooden house on the museum grounds, keeps the site busy.
Sung Hung Pagoda, 1.6 km
Sung Hung grew out of two small temples, Sung Nghia and Hung Nhan, built in the late 19th century and later merged. A Quan Am statue stands by the pond at the gate, and the main hall honours both Buddhist figures and the local hero Nguyen Trung Truc. Entry is free. Cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low, and skip photos in the main hall during ceremonies.
Long Beach on foot, and the sunset
Long Beach, Bai Truong in Vietnamese, runs about 20 km down the west coast beside Tran Hung Dao, and the hotel sits near its northern end, where it meets the town. The beach faces west, so the sun drops into the sea in front of the sand; a walk south at golden hour passes beach bars and resort fronts.
| Month | Sunset (calculated) | Sea on the west coast |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-October | 5.47 pm | Showers still possible; sea settling |
| Mid-November | 5.38 pm | Dry season begins |
| Mid-December | 5.45 pm | Dry, calm |
| Mid-January | 6.00 pm | Calmest month with February |
| Mid-April | 6.14 pm | Hot, still dry |
| Mid-July | 6.29 pm | Rainy, monsoon waves |
Sunset times are calculated for the hotel’s position and rounded. The sea is calmest from late October to April; the south-west monsoon months, May to October, bring chop and washed-up debris.
Diving and snorkelling from Duong Dong
Several dive centres trade along Tran Hung Dao; hotel listing data puts the nearest two about 800 m away. Boats run either to the more sheltered north-west or to the small islands below An Thoi, which have more sites but catch more swell. Flipper Diving Club at 60 Tran Hung Dao lists prices for guests staying in the centre on a page last revised in July 2025: VND 900,000 for a snorkelling day, VND 1,900,000–2,400,000 for two fun dives, and VND 3,000,000 for a first-time Discover Scuba session. Pick-up is around 7.45 am, back about 4 pm.
A July 2026 island-wide survey put group snorkel tours at roughly US$20–30. December to March gives the clearest water; June to September is the weakest season for visibility and sea state.
Massage streets and a cooking class
Massage on Tran Hung Dao
Massage salons run the length of Tran Hung Dao, starting a few doors from the hotel lane: Phu Quoc Day Spa at 100/3 Tran Hung Dao is about 210 m away and opens 9 am to 11 pm. A July 2026 guide put a one-hour body massage at VND 300,000–500,000, with main-strip shops 30–50% dearer than those down side lanes.
Cooking classes
Two small schools sit on the same road: Troc’s Kitchen at 122 Tran Hung Dao, about US$45–59 for three to four hours, and Moc Kitchen in alley 47/8, about US$45–55 (October 2026 listings). Book a day ahead and ask whether a market visit is included.
Evening: the night market
The night market fills Bach Dang street by the river, 2.3 km from the hotel: 5–8 minutes by Grab or a 30-minute walk. Stalls open in the late afternoon and wind down around 11.30 pm. The stall company’s ten-year lease expired at the end of 2025; in April 2026 the zone said the market would not be scrapped and that new sites were being studied, and visitors in June and August 2026 found it open, if smaller. Our night market guide covers what to eat and what it costs.
Beyond 15 minutes: half-day trips
Three trips need a car and a few hours. Ham Ninh fishing village, on the east coast, is 13.6 km away, 20–25 minutes, for seafood on a pier. A fish-sauce factory about 2.6 km away and the pepper farms inland make an easy morning. The theme parks of the north, Grand World among them, are 24 km and 35–45 minutes away, a full outing rather than a side trip.
Questions about things to do in Duong Dong
Can you walk from Sunset Beach Resort to Duong Dong town?
Yes, but it is a road walk. The centre is about 2 km north along Tran Hung Dao, roughly 25–30 minutes, and the night market is about 30 minutes on foot. It is a busy main road, so many guests walk one way and take a Grab back, at about VND 30,000–60,000 for a short hop (October 2026).
Is Coi Nguon Museum worth an hour?
Yes, if you want context for the island. It is 1.6 km from the hotel, and its fish-sauce, pearl and stilt-house displays explain what you see on the rest of the island. Tickets were VND 50,000 in 2025. Go in the morning, as most listings show a midday break.
What can you do in Duong Dong when it rains?
Head indoors: Coi Nguon Museum, a massage on Tran Hung Dao at VND 300,000–500,000 an hour (July 2026), or a three-to-four-hour cooking class at Troc’s Kitchen. Keep the sunset walk for a clear evening.
When is the best time for snorkelling from Duong Dong?
December to March. Visibility then reaches 10–20 m on the reefs below An Thoi, and the west coast is calm. From June to September the south-west monsoon cuts visibility to 3–5 m and boats often stay in port; operators then switch to the more sheltered north.
Distances, hours, tickets and third-party prices checked October 2026; prices change with the season.
