Phu Quoc Night Market: What to Eat, Prices and Getting There

The Phu Quoc night market trades along Bach Dang Street in Duong Dong, beside the Dinh Cau shrine, from about 5 pm until 10–11.45 pm. Seafood is picked from ice and grilled to order, usually priced by weight: a July 2026 guide put Ham Ninh crab at VND 200,000–350,000 per kilo. From Sunset Beach Resort the market is 2.3 km by road, 5–8 minutes by Grab or about 30 minutes on foot.

2026 has been unsettled: the site lease ended on 31 December 2025, stalls are fewer, and the authorities plan a new site, still unnamed in October 2026.

A seafood stall at Phu Quoc Night Market after dark: a long counter of crushed ice heaped with live spiny lobsters, halved orange sea urchins, scallops on the half shell, tiger prawns and a whole red snapper under warm hanging bulbs, a traveller seen from behind pointing at a lobster, and grill smoke drifting along a string-lit market street

Where the market is, and what changed in 2026

The market fills Bach Dang Street, the riverside road that runs to the Dinh Cau headland at the mouth of the Duong Dong River, and spills into parts of Nguyen Trai, Ly Tu Trong and Le Loi. Food comes first, souvenirs further back. Older guides still send you to Vo Thi Sau, the street it occupied before moving about 100 metres to Bach Dang.

The bigger change is legal. The ten-year lease for the Bach Dang walking street and market, signed in September 2015, expired at the end of 2025, and the island has spent 2026 deciding what comes next.

Opening hours and the best time to go

There are no posted hours. Stalls start setting up around 5 pm, a few from mid-afternoon in high season, and the street is busiest from about 7 to 9 pm. Closing depends on the crowd: an April 2026 guide had some stalls packing up from 9.30 pm, while a June 2026 visitor found it trading until 11.30–11.45 pm at the latest.

The easy plan is to arrive around 6.30 pm. Sunset falls at roughly 5.40 pm in November and about 6.30 pm in July, so you can watch it from the Dinh Cau rocks a few minutes’ walk away, then reach the stalls just as the grills get going and before the 7 pm rush. Weekends and holiday weeks are the most crowded.

What to eat, and what it cost in 2026

Seafood grilled to order

The seafood stalls work the same way: live and chilled seafood sits on ice out front, you point at what you want, agree the price, and it comes back grilled, steamed or stir-fried a few minutes later. Classics are grilled sea urchin with spring-onion oil, scallops, oysters baked with cheese, flower crab from Ham Ninh on the east coast, squid and prawns, plus goi ca trich, the island’s raw herring salad rolled in rice paper.

Snacks and sweets

Between the seafood counters you find Thai-style rolled ice cream scraped off a frozen plate, banh trang nuong (grilled rice paper, often sold as Vietnamese pizza), keo chi (spun sugar wrapped in rice paper), bun quay noodles and palm-sugar cake. Sim wine, made from rose myrtle berries, is poured for free tastings at the souvenir end.

A July 2026 guide put a seafood dinner for two at VND 300,000–400,000, and an August 2026 guide reckoned market seafood runs 20–30% above simple restaurants away from the tourist strip. Prices climb with size and season, so treat these as a yardstick rather than a menu.

How weighing works, and how to avoid a surprise bill

Most complaints about the market come from the weight, not the food. Some stalls price per portion or per plate, some per kilo and some per 100 grams, and a sign reading 200,000 beside a crab can mean 100 grams rather than the whole animal. Four habits keep the bill predictable:

Ask the unit first. Per kilo, per 100 g, per piece or per plate. Watch it weighed. Stay at the scale and look at the figure before anything goes on the grill. Ask for the total. Get the full price, including any cooking charge, said back to you or typed on a phone. Pick busy stalls. Steady local custom usually means faster turnover and fresher seafood.

Food prices are generally fixed, so haggling over a plate of scallops gets you little. Souvenirs are different: bargaining is expected, and an October 2025 guide suggested opening at 70–80% of the asking price. Bring cash in small notes; most stalls do not take cards, and QR payment is hit and miss for foreign phones.

Pearls, pepper and other souvenirs

Pearl jewellery is the market’s best-known buy and its biggest trap. Strings and earrings sell for roughly VND 100,000 to 1,000,000, and guides updated in April and August 2026 warn that most cheap pieces are freshwater or imported pearls, or imitations, rather than Phu Quoc saltwater pearls. If you want the real thing, buy from an established pearl farm showroom and ask for a certificate.

Safer buys are vacuum-packed Phu Quoc pepper (VND 230,000–300,000 per kg in October 2025), dried seafood and sim wine. Ask where an item was made: not everything on the souvenir rows comes from the island.

Getting there from Sunset Beach Resort

The resort is at 100C/2 Tran Hung Dao, at the northern end of Long Beach, and the market is 2.3 km north by road through Duong Dong centre. See our location guide for the other distances from the hotel.

Walk in, ride back

Walking in at dusk works well: the first stretch of Tran Hung Dao past the resort has cafés, spas and shops, and the route stays on main roads into the centre. Coming back late, take a Grab. The final stretch to the resort is a short lane off Tran Hung Dao that is poorly lit at night, and a car can drop you at the door. The hotel has no confirmed evening shuttle into town; a taxi can be arranged on request — ask the hotel when you book.

Fitting it around the hotel evening

Sunset Fusion, the resort restaurant, serves until 10 pm, and on show nights the beach bar runs a free fire show at about 10 pm. Leave the market by 9.30 pm and you are back in time. Our facilities guide covers bar hours and the show.

Honest noteThis is not the market of a few years ago. With the lease gone and power cut in March 2026, the stall count has dropped, the street feels improvised, and one January 2026 reviewer called it unmanaged and unhygienic. Seafood costs more than at plain local restaurants. If a big, organised night market is the point of your evening, the Sunset Town bazaar is 23 km south of the resort, 35–45 minutes by car. And if you plan several market nights, a hotel in central Duong Dong puts you closer than our 2.3 km.

Questions about the Phu Quoc night market

Is the Phu Quoc night market closed in 2026?

No, but it is in transition. The site lease ended on 31 December 2025 and power and water were cut in March 2026, yet stalls kept trading on Bach Dang Street, and visitors in June and August 2026 found it open, if smaller. The authorities said in April 2026 that the market will continue at a new site, still unnamed in October.

Is the night market on Vo Thi Sau or Bach Dang Street?

Bach Dang. The market moved from Vo Thi Sau Street to Bach Dang, about 100 metres away, and now runs along Bach Dang towards Dinh Cau, with stalls on parts of Nguyen Trai, Ly Tu Trong and Le Loi. Some older guides and map listings still show the Vo Thi Sau address; a Grab driver will know the market by name.

How much should I budget for dinner at the night market?

A July 2026 guide put a seafood dinner for two at VND 300,000–400,000, with snacks such as skewers or rolled ice cream at VND 20,000–50,000 each. Crab, lobster and large prawns, sold by weight, push the bill up fast, so ask the unit and the total before cooking. Carry cash in small notes.

Can I walk back to Sunset Beach Resort after the market?

You can, it is about 30 minutes, but a Grab is the better choice after dark. Tran Hung Dao is busy with traffic, and the lane from the main road to the resort entrance is poorly lit. A Grab car covers the 2.3 km in 5–8 minutes and drops you at the door.
